The WakeUp Call Newsletter
The Voice of the WakeUp Revolution!
December 2006 Issue
Welcome
to the December issue of The WakeUp Call
- The Voice of the WakeUp Revolution!
For some, December is a time of real
joy. For others, this time brings much
sadness.
I believe that much of it has to do with
the state of their lives - what they
'see' when they look around and reflect
back on the past year, and what they see
when they look forward towards the New
Year. Is it hope or regret? Or is it
something in between?
If you're looking around and you don't
like everything you see, this month's
feature story will ask you the 'hard'
questions that will help prepare you so
you can make 2007 everything you want it
to be (but you'll have to work at it -
there's no little blue pill enclosed...).
Since many of us will receive gifts this
month, I request that you each perform
one random act of kindness as a way to
give back a gift to the world. Whether
it's something small like holding the
door open for someone or letting them in
at the merge - it all counts. Together
they will add up to a lot.
(See
Mike's recent blog entry for more on
this.)
I have already been receiving my gifts -
from all of you. Thank you for taking
this ride with me on what has been a
transformational year in my life. Thank
you for allowing what I have in my heart
and my head to have a 'voice.' Each one
of you has contributed in some way -
even if we have never formally met.
I have no idea what the next year will
bring, but I'm filled with hope,
excitement, a little fear, a lot of
energy, and the gift of being surrounded
by those I love and respect. I look
forward to continuing our adventure
together and I hope you're ready,
because next year we all are going to
play much bigger!
Have a safe and joyous holiday and let's
fill 2007 with love, laughter, peace,
possibility and an abundance of
abundance!
- Mike

FEATURED STORY
Yes, December
has already arrived, sooner and warmer
than expected. I have always found
December to be a very interesting month,
filled with holidays, birthdays (my
mom's birthday is on Christmas Day and
my sister's is just before), hopes,
reflection, and hopefully, not too much
coal.
For some, this is a time of real joy -
spending quality time with the kids and
family, taking a break from work,
regrouping, reenergizing, another mile
marker on the road of life. It is a time
for celebration.
For others, this time is exactly the
opposite - lonely, depressing, congested
with traffic and too many guests or
visitors, and really just a lot of
sadness.
I wonder if some of it has to do with
the state of their lives? Is it driven
by what they 'see' when they reflect on the past year?
What about you? What do you 'see' when
you look back at the past year, when you
look at where you are today and when you
look forward to what is to come? Do you
like what you see? Do you love it?
In human measurement, another year has
gone by. We only get so many of them. For some, that one year is their
entire lifetime. I know it's sad but it's true. For others, it is 1/50th of
their life. For my beautiful
Grandmother, it's one of more than 91
years. She tells me that from her
perspective, every morning when she
wakes up she looks around and thinks to
herself, "Well, I'm still here today so
it's going to be a great day!" She
measures her life one day at a time.
But we don't typically do that - at
least not yet. We are not yet that wise.
So, the end of the year is a great time
to take an assessment and see where we
are. But what are you using to measure
it? Is it about 'how much'? Or can we
measure differently? Instead of taking
an inventory of stuff or things, let's
look at how satisfied, meaningful and
happy we are.
Here are some questions to reflect upon
so you can look back, look around and
look forward and choose to make 2007 a
meaningful and important year in your
life. (Notice I didn't say 'best' year
because how do you compare a full year
to another? How can I compare any year
to the year I was married or had my
kids?) Take some time with these. Let
things reveal themselves to you. Have
fun with them. These are also great
questions to do with a spouse, partner
or friend.
Looking back:
In
January of 2006, what did you think
this year would bring for you?
Who did
you think you would become? Who did
you become?
What
were the saddest moments of the
year? The happiest? The most
exciting?
The most
surprising?
What did
you 'accomplish' this year?
What did
you create this year? What did you
maintain? What did you let go of?
How were
you a contribution this year - To
your loved ones? To the world? To
yourself?
What did
you expect, think or wish was going
to happen this year that didn't?
What did happen that you couldn't
have guessed in a million years?
Looking
back at the year, what are you proud
of?
What
would you like to do differently
next time?
What new
doors opened for you?
What
would you like to acknowledge
yourself for, for this past year?
Looking
around:
What do
you have in your life that you love?
What
would you like to have more of? Less
of?
What
would you like to add? Remove?
Where
are you not living at a '10'?
What are
the three things you want to achieve
in the next 12 months that will make
you feel like you had a great year?
Looking
ahead:
How would you like to answer the same
questions above in exactly one year from
now?
As I've
mentioned before, you have been given
the gift of another day (maybe we are
measuring in days after all ;)) You get
to create a new beginning for yourself
at any time. This is the time. Why not
now! Rewrite your future! When
you ask yourself these same questions
next year, you will have a smile on your
face and a sense of satisfaction knowing
that you just had that one of the most
meaningful and important years of your
life.
Why live any other way?

Here
is your simple gift for the holidays:
'Thank You.' That's it. An expression of
gratitude. Doesn't cost much to give, doesn't
take much time, but somehow it can require a
heroic effort. When someone offers you an
acknowledgment (see
last month's issue),
all there is to say is a simple 'Thank You.'
Don't deflect, don't skirt around, don't dilute
or diminish. Just say thanks. And by doing so,
you will actually be giving them a gift. They
get the experience of you actually receiving
what they are trying to give you. If you don't
accept it, it's like rejecting a present. So
rather than saying 'no thanks' with your
discomfort of accepting their compliment,
just say thanks. Nancy Reagan would be
proud.
